Athenian Black-figure amphora vase with stand.
Side A)
In the centre of the vase are depicted hoplites, including Ares and Poseidon. On the neck of the vase is the goddess Athena. Hermes appears on the lid, conversing with Athena.
At the foot of the vase, Achilles and Thetis are depicted.
Side B)
In the centre of the vase are depicted hoplites, with Agamemnon in the centre. On the neck, Achilles is shown at a young age. At the foot of the vase, Agamemnon is depicted in action.
Both the size and the rich decoration of the vase with designs from the Geometric and the late Hellenistic period reveal the economic prosperity and the social class of its owner.
This amphora is a special example of Attic pottery, with unique characteristics. The height of the amphora, as well as the style of its handles, stands out. It was probably a special order from the owner to the creator of the work.
